Following the announcement of the lockdown, which starts today, we have been monitoring government guidelines and advice from the RYA. These have been developing over the last couple of days, which has unfortunately made it difficult to make an early decision.
The news unfortunately isn’t good. With immediate effect the club is closed until further notice, both the site and the water.
Access is permitted to site, but only for essential maintenance and repairs. This doesn’t include grass cutting, boat washing, or anything else that can reasonably be expected to wait until the lockdown ends.
The site will be checked twice a week, for general security and to check the boat park.
At the moment we can’t say when the club will reopen. As restrictions change we will of course review the situation.

Ogston Sailing Club – Latest guidance on our response to Covid-19
As you may have seen in the news, North East Derbyshire will shortly be classified as Tier 2 under the governments Covid-19 restrictions. With Ogston Sailing Club being situated in NE Derbyshire we need to respond and adjust some of our previously notified procedures. As an organised sports club we can continue sailing, however we need to adjust some of our restrictions and rules. If you’d like to know more about the specific rules around what being in a Tier 2 area means then please take a look at the government website https://www.gov.uk/guidance/local-covid-alert-level-high There are also some recommendations for those living in or travelling from a Tier 2 or 3 area which you may wish to consider.
We would like to remind you of some of the basic safety precautions you should be taking during the pandemic. If you have any Covid symptoms (high temperature, persistent cough, loss of smell etc.) then you must not come down to the club. If you have been in contact with someone who has had Covid then you need to self-isolate and not come to the club until your period of quarantine has finished.
When arriving at the club you should scan in on the test and trace barcode and follow the standard precautionary guidelines of cleaning Hands, covering your Face and maintaining Space from others. If you cannot maintain 2 metres from someone else it is mandatory to wear a face covering. Otherwise you can follow the same guidelines for being outside. The rules for sailing and those on duty remain unchanged.
The clubhouse and bar will no longer be open for general use by members. You should seek to arrive at the club ready changed and go home to change after sailing. There may be some exceptions to this such as those needing to use the disabled changing facilities or for special circumstances. If you do have to use the changing rooms this should be limited to a short period and you must adhere to the separation rules.
The OOD will need to enter the clubhouse to retrieve the keys. The boat shed should only be entered by those on duty, and they should wear a face covering as they will be indoors and likely to get close to each other. If a member needs to retrieve something from the boat shed please ask one of those on duty.
In between sailing, when having lunch etc. then the rule of 6 still applies. You will need to sit outside and bring your own food and drinks. The kitchen and bar will not be available.
The OOD will be in charge on the day and you should respect and follow their requests if they remind you about adhering to the Covid rules. The OOD is responsible for opening the club and keeping the clubhouse and boat shed locked when not in use. They and the safety crews have more detailed sets of guidelines to help them fulfil their duties while remaining Covid secure.
Thank you for your support during this difficult period. We are really pleased that we can continue to let everyone sail, and in return we ask that you follow the rules and guidelines. Together we can keep Ogston open and our members safe.
The Covid Committee
Following RYA and Government guidance the Sailing Club will be reopening on Wednesday 20th for members. The committees have been working hard behind the scenes over the past two months to agree a new sailing regime to allow us to get back on the water safely.
Please see below the new temporary format:
The Clubhouse, Boat shed and Tower are all out of bounds except the Boat shed toilet during sailing sessions. OOD’s / Safety Crews and Sailors will be sent out instructions prior to each sailing session via email / Dutyman. Sailors / Safety Crew to come pre dressed for the sailing session as there won’t be access into the changing facilities.
Sailors will need to pre register for sailing online via the website. Sailors are to be from the same household only and we are limiting the number of boat entries to 15. (See below link). The Online Booking system will go live 48hrs prior to the sessions and you can only sail every other session. However, we will monitor popularity. This will be classed as the signing on sheet for the session. If for any reason you would like to cancel your registration and can’t make the session please contact Craig Harrison or myself.
We are kicking things off with some “Casual” racing / Social sailing to test the new system out. This won’t constitute a series but we hope to change this as soon as possible if members stick to the rules. It will show on Dutyman as “Covid Sailing”. Please keep using Dutyman to check who’s on duty and the format. Can I also urge members to try and carry on doing duties going forward. We have cleaning and PPE measures in place to protect our members.
We’re Starting off with a Wednesday Evening Pursuit race at 7pm. The gate will be open so no need to touch anything other than your own boat! However, It is advised that you bring your own hand sanitation if possible please.
Friday evenings will start at 7pm and offer a 2 hour social sailing / practice session.
Sunday’s will offer two races back to back starting at 12pm. Note: All sessions will be restricted to a max wind speed of 17mph.
Can I urge all Sailors to turn up 45 minutes prior to the starting times. This will allow the OOD to get safety boats and retreat launched safely without the risk of infection. Sanitise hands before and after using the keypad. The gate should be opened prior to sailing sessions and closed during the session by the OOD. Then re opened for sailors to leave. If for some reason the OOD is not available then sanitise hands before and after use.
Please stick to the social distancing government guidance whilst on the site including when launching your boat. There are markers in place on the shoreline, so please go between those and leave trolleys in your space.
Access is now granted from Wednesday at 8am onwards for members wishing to do maintenance on their boat or boat berth. However, please DO NOT do this during sailing times.
There will be no access to the Clubhouse or Boat shed other than the WC by the Comet Trios, so please bring your own equipment, Food & Drink.
All members must adhere to the above guidance.
I’d like to finish by thanking the whole of the membership for supporting the club during this difficult time and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Club.
