Sailability at Ogston Sailing Club
Ogston Sailing Club welcomes water users who have disabilities and mobility issues.
Sailing is a great activity for people with almost any disability or mobility problems.
We have the facilities, support and boats that enable people to sail leisurely, but also compete on level terms with other sailors.
Sailability is the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) national programme for disabled people who want to go boating regularly. The Club runs RYA learn to sail courses throughout the year and these qualifications would enable the holder to sail at other venues. Alternatively, an experienced Challenger sailor will instruct you to the same level, over a longer period, offering a less intense introduction to sailing.
The Sailability Section at Ogston has five Challenger Tri-marans which enable disabled members or those who have mobility issues to sail on an equal basis to able-bodied sailors.
Anyone wishing to join the Sailability Section and sail a Challenger will have their sailing ability assessed by an experienced sailor using a “buddy seat” on the Challenger. This buddy seat enables the assessor to sit alongside them to instruct and advise on how to sail these dinghies. Once the instructor is confident that the member can sail the dinghy they will be able to sail on their own.
Once familiar with the boats you will be able to join in with club racing which takes place on a regular basis. We hold a national competition once a year which attracts Challenger sailors from all over the Country.
Sailability membership includes a non-sailing helper and we encourage members to bring their own assistants as disabled sailors usually require someone to assist in launching and retrieving the boats.
We also have 2 extra large paddle-boards which carry 6 people, this enables people with mobility issues, after a suitability assessment, to be taken out on the water by experienced instructors.
We have male, female and inclusive changing facilities. The inclusive changing facility can be used by any member, but we ask that all personal items are removed so that this facility can be used by other members.
Anyone with a hearing or sight impairment or who uses a wheelchair should ensure their helper is aware of their location at all times so that in an emergency situation, the Club can be sure they will be evacuated safely.
Although the Club will assist as much as possible with informal mobility issues, the responsibility for personal safety both on and off the water remains with the Sailability sailor and their helper. All Club members must pay consideration to the prevailing weather conditions and their own sailing capability each time they use the Club facilities.
If you would like a trial session sailing one of our boats or would just like to come along and see what is involved, contact:
