Youth Learn to Sail
The Youth Learn to Sail Stage 2 & 3 course will be on the weekend of the 6th & 7th May 2023 and trains young sailors from 8 years old to meet the requirements of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme. There will also be a stage 1 course on the 20th and 21st May 2023. The young sailors are provided with a boat for the season and split into 3 training groups based on previous experience and qualifications. By the third year they will have achieved RYA stage 3 and be capable of rigging, launching and sailing a dinghy on their own.
The sailors then sail at the Fun Club each week where there will be safety and organised activities to practice the skills learned on the RYA course. Use of boats at the fun club is free for those members who have completed the RYA course in that year.
The Youth Learn to Sail culminates in the Ogston Youth Gala in early July, when the young sailors form band of pirates take over the club for a day’s competitions followed by prize giving and award of RYA certificates.
Training is provided by RYA qualified and registered instructors using boats owned and maintained by the club.
Ogston Youth Saturday Fun Club
The youth fun club is run throughout May and June (other than on the Junior Learn to Sail weekend). From 10.00 to 12.30.
Any club youth member can join in (with willing parents). For those youth members who have yet to completed the RYA youth scheme stage 1, they must be supervised, by a competent parent or delegated adult who can sail with them.
Each week will be a different set of games or free sailing activities that are designed to develop confidence and sailing skills whilst having fun. Occasionally we will have guest coaches from inside and outside the club to gain insight in their special skills.
